Yoga FAQ for beginners

Everything you need to know if you’re new to the practice of yoga.

What is yoga?

Yoga is a system for bringing balance to your body and mind. It uses physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, self-enquiry, and philosophy. While Western yoga often focuses on the physical poses, there’s much more to discover as your practice deepens.

I’m a yoga beginner – which style should I start with?

Gentle yoga is a great foundation, helping you learn basic poses and names. Try Moonlight Flow Yoga for Beginners course for a gentle introduction. For a more physical challenge, consider Vinyasa Yoga later.

How do I know if I'm doing yoga poses correctly?

There’s no “one right way” as bodies differ. Focus on finding what works for you. Beginners’ classes with clear instructions and variations are helpful. Listen to your body and avoid sharp or pinching pain.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Yoga offers both physical and mental benefits. Physically, it improves flexibility, strength, breathing, energy, and metabolism. It also enhances your heart health, fitness, and posture. Mentally, it promotes happiness, balance, and emotional calmness, helps manage stress, and boosts self-confidence. You’ll feel some benefits, like release of tension and muscle strengthening, right away. Other benefits unfold with regular practice.

How often should I practice yoga?

Even once a week makes a difference! Aim for 2-3 sessions weekly, but don’t let unrealistic expectations deter you. Short 10-20 minute practices are better than nothing. Do what you can, when you can, and be proud of your efforts.

I have a health condition. Can I still do yoga?

Many people find yoga helpful in managing health conditions. Various classes cater to different needs and can be adapted for injuries. However, if you have a new health condition or haven’t practiced yoga before, seek advice from an experienced yoga teacher or a physical therapist familiar with yoga to discuss poses or movements to avoid.

Remember, consulting a healthcare professional is always recommended before starting any new exercise program, especially if you have a pre-existing condition.

Yoga is a journey, not a destination. Focus on enjoying the process and be kind to yourself as you explore this amazing practice.

Meet Your Instructor

Moon Liew

I have been practicing yoga for over a decade, since 2008 to be precise, and have found it to be an incredible source of physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. As a result of my dedication and passion for yoga, I have achieved an advanced Hatha Yoga Level 3 certification from the prestigious British School of Yoga, which has enabled me to deepen my practice and share my knowledge with others.

Moreover, my commitment to teaching and sharing the benefits of yoga has led me to become a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance UK. This certification has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of yoga philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methodology, which has further enhanced my ability to guide students of all levels towards their wellness goals.

Overall, I am grateful for the transformative power of yoga and am committed to continuing my journey as a practitioner and teacher, while sharing my passion for this beautiful practice with others.
